The Values of Education
Education is a term that is used to describe the type, level, and content of instruction. It is the specific knowledge that a person acquires through the process of teaching. For example, doctors are educated in medicine; chemists are educated in chemistry; bankers are educated in finance and economics; and language learners are taught in languages. Education also refers to the process of teaching in general. Regardless of the context, education is a vital part of human development.
Arguments in favor of education
The debate over the quality and extent of education is framed by assumptions about what education is. The problem of education of the populace consists in the equitable distribution of teaching across social classes. Further, the notion of education suggests that human activity is more extensive than merely instruction. It involves training of individuals in their physical, moral, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions. Furthermore, educational activity should be based on rational principles, and should be attuned to the spirit of the time.
In the XX century, debates about education arose in Parana. Intellectuals who wished to introduce agricultural studies into the primary-school curriculum organized the debate. The issue of (re)organizing the school and society was framed as a matter of principle. Those who wanted to incorporate agriculture into the primary-school curriculum argued that such teaching was necessary for the realization of spirit discipline. These debates are related to the history of education.
Common Core
Merrow has been a journalist for National Public Radio and PBS Newshour for over thirty years. He has won many awards and broken major stories, including the New Math initiative, and created a documentary production company. The Common Core education standards are a new reality for public schools across the country. As educators grapple with how to teach the standards, some are re-thinking their tests tied to Common Core. The following is an excerpt from an interview with Merrow.
While critics of the standards complain that the federal government imposed them on states, they should be aware that these standards are not legally required for states to adopt. While states weren’t explicitly required to use Common Core, the Obama administration pushed them to do so. Some states even received No Child Left Behind waivers without adopting Common Core. Moreover, the federal government offered incentives to states to adopt Common Core in order to compete for federal funds. Some of these incentives included grants to groups who developed standardized tests.
Alternative schooling models
The debate over the American public school system is a big topic in education, and many parents are concerned that their children may not be receiving the best education possible. While wealthy suburban and rural public schools tend to perform better in standardized testing, they also receive more funding than urban ones. And if you don’t have a choice in where your child attends school, alternative schooling models may be a better option. Homeschooling is also an option, but it presents many challenges.
Many alternative schooling models emphasize learning through experience. The ideas of John Dewey have inspired a number of alternative schools, including Schools Without Walls, which encourage students to experience learning in non-traditional locations. Programs like Outward Bound, Foxfire, and others let students learn through field trips to explore local folklore and cultures. While these programs don’t use standardized test scores, students are given narrative assessments that measure mastery of class content.
Values of education
One of the key questions of the debate on the values of education is what constitutes an educational value? According to Powney et al., an educational value is the process of transferring moral values. Therefore, the value of an educational institution depends on its moral values. As an educational institution, it must provide students with moral values, which are essential to their well-being. The following are the definitions of educational values. Identifying these values will help you decide whether or not an educational institution is of value.
In addition to promoting good moral values, value education also teaches students how to be responsible and successful adults. It teaches students to respect others, while also helping them develop strong relationships with their family and friends. Thus, it is important for an educational institution to provide a positive environment that fosters learning. Listed below are some of the values of an educational institution:
