Entertaiment is an activity that holds an audience’s interest and gives pleasure or delight. It may be as simple as a private movie for two; as complex as an elaborate banquet, a religious festival or a political satire; or as extensive as performances intended for thousands. In some cases entertainment is purely for fun, but it can also serve a social purpose, such as child development through play or the practice of musical and sporting skills. The word entertain originates from the Latin intertenere and its Indo-European root ten, meaning “to hold inside.”
